Peritoneal Dialysis Subprogram

In 60-70 % of the cases, there is no medical indication that gives supremacy to any of the dialysis techniques, so that informing the patient and the family correctly and in detail will be the fundamental element that will allow them to decide the best treatment option.

Unfortunately, in our city, the difficulties faced by patients in accessing hemodialysis and the underutilization of peritoneal dialysis, to which only less than 3% of the dialysis population has access due to the scarcity of available programs, are publicly known.

In 2019, 88 new patients were admitted to dialysis in Mar del Plata (SINTRA). These incidence figures are expected to progressively increase considering the ongoing epidemiological transition, i.e., the increase in chronic diseases and the progressive aging of the population that also predispose to CKD.

In Renálida, the implementation of the Peritoneal Dialysis Program was planned to provide support to the public (CEMA) and private health system of our city, taking into account the described problems and the fact that most of the patients with CKD who need renal replacement therapy may be candidates for PD.

Program Objectives

This dialytic modality should become the first-line treatment for CKD for several reasons:

The Dialysis Quality Assurance Program will be developed to control each of the processes related to peritoneal dialysis.
